SS Surviving SaneCounselling for shift workers

Clinical and practical frame

Counselling For The Parts Of Rota Life That Do Not Recover On A Day Off

The practice works with sleep disruption, irritability, low mood, isolation, grief, anxiety and relationship strain linked to night work, early starts, late finishes and rotating shifts.

The shift-work frame

Arranged Around Actual Rotas Where Possible

A fixed weekly hour can be useless when your working week moves. Sessions are arranged around published rotas where possible, including early and late appointments for current shift workers.

The work pays attention to the timing of distress. A thought that arrives at 03:00 after a hard handover can feel different from the same thought after sleep, food and daylight.

Session structure

A Plain Shape For Tired People

01

Check-In

Sleep, shifts, mood, food, home pressure and any risk concerns are brought into view first.

02

Focus

The session agrees one useful focus rather than trying to fix every tired part of the week.

03

Work

We look at patterns in thoughts, feelings, choices and relationships shaped by rota life.

04

Close

The close is deliberate, especially before returning to a shift, childcare or the long drive home.

05

Observe

Between sessions, clients notice what changes after nights or before the next rota.

Common work themes

The Specific Strain Of Unsocial Hours

  • The 03:00 low point, when worries sharpen and perspective narrows.
  • Day-sleep guilt, especially when family life carries on around you.
  • Missed family time and the pressure to be cheerful when exhausted.
  • Handover pressure after incidents, complaints or short staffing.
  • Recovery days that never recover because errands, childcare and noise fill the gap.

Boundaries

When Another Service Is More Appropriate

Surviving Sane Counselling does not offer crisis intervention, emergency mental health cover or same-day risk management.

  • Use 999 if there is immediate danger to life or safety.
  • Use NHS 111, your GP, NHS Talking Therapies or your local crisis team if urgent clinical support is needed.
  • The practice does not work with clients under 18.
  • The practice does not provide active addiction treatment where specialist medical care is required first.
  • The practice does not provide couples therapy, family therapy, mediation or employer-mandated disciplinary counselling.

Quiet process tabs

Choose The Shape That Fits Your Rota

Individual Counselling

50 minute sessions in Hull or online. The work can be weekly, fortnightly or arranged around known shifts where possible.

Rota Block

Six sessions booked around a published rota and paid in advance. This helps clients who lose momentum when diary gaps are left too late.

Sleep And Rota Review

A 90 minute session with a written personal action summary. It looks at routines, pressure points and realistic changes, without diagnosing medical sleep disorders.
